It all began with nickel pulp magazines. Publishers pumped out titles like Detective Stories, Romance Stories, South Sea Stories, Railroad Stories, Amazing Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories, anyway, you get the picture. These magazines, with bright, lurid cover art, filled newsstands for the first half of the 20th Century and were read by millions.

During that time, Hollywood produced movies with chapter serials. Studios like Republic Pictures churned out scores of Saturday matinee thrillers like The Crimson Ghost and Flash Gordon, before television came along. That infernal box sank the Saturday serials and pulp magazines to the bottom of the sea of indifference.

​Then cheap paperback books came along and filled drugstore book racks with imprints like Medallion, Gold Medal, and Dell. For a mere 25¢ readers were introduced to a new generation of detectives, spies, and romantic interludes. Now it's the Internet Age, with books being read on hand held e-readers like Kindle and Nook. No more paper pages to turn. Does that bother you? Maybe not. But it does us!
