Richard Toronto was founder and editor of Shavertron fanzine, dedicated to the life and times of science fiction writer and artist Richard S. Shaver. Toronto’s editorial work culminated in Shaver's first major biography, War over Lemuria, (McFarland & Co. 2013) praised by the LA Review of Books.
Toronto was a photography instructor at Napa State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, a pressman, and a newspaper reporter. He earned his BA in Journalism with a minor in Photography from CSU Sacramento. He studied film at CSU San Francisco, but dropped out. His 16mm film, Creature in My Blood, screened on the Creature Features TV show in Oakland, California.
